Blue dream – Rêve bleu

I finished my ‘Blue Dream”

I spent a lot of time in cutting the threads between some of the letters.
This improvised piece measures +/- 21 x 33 inch.
I combined several techniques:
The improvised collage of ripped fabric,
To keep it all in place, I sewn it all together,
I stamped some forms with textile paint,
I embroidered some poems
And to finish I quilted this work.

J’ai terminé mon “Rêve Bleu”

J’ai passé énormément de temps à couper les fils entre certaines lettres.
Mais, personnellement, je suis heureuse du résultat.
Cette œuvre improvisé mesure 55 x 85 cm.
J’ai combiné de nombreuses techniques différentes :
Le ‘collage improvisé’ de bouts de tissus déchirés,
Pour les maintenir en place, je les ai cousus,
Le tamponnage (j’ai utilisé de la peinture textile),
La broderie : les poèmes,
Et le matelassage pour finir.

Bag –Sac

I needed a practical bag to put spare clothes in after done with sporting.

Il me fallait un sac de sport pratique pour mettre des vêtements de rechange.

Since I couldn’t find one to my convenience, I made one.

Comme je n’en ai trouvé aucun à ma convenance dans le commerce..

J’en ai cousu un.

After the reading the clear instructions and selected the fabric, I started to cut and sew.

Après avoir lu les instructions très clair et choisi le tissu, je me suis mise à l’ouvrage avec beaucoup de plaisir.

This was really simple to sew. No surprises.

Je n’ai eu aucune surprise désagréable durant la réalisation de ce sac.

Instead of using fleece wadding, I used warm & natural.

Je n’ai effectué qu’un changement : au lieu d’utiliser le fleece, j’ai préféré utiliser le warm & natural.

I can undo the ties on both sides and have an even bigger bag.

Je peux défaire les nœuds sur les côtés et obtenir un sac encore plus grand.

Cell phone Pouch part 2- pochette pour portable seconde partie

Now that you have your new created surface we will take our sewing machine and start to do some fancy stitches.

Take a topstitch needle and put it in.

Choose a nice metallic thread and thread it.
I chose a bobbinfil thread to use in the bobbin.
Use an appliqué foot (I like to see what I’m doing!)
I chose a swirly stitch with a candlewicking accent.
If needed, adapt the tension. Therefore you need to sew a sample to make the adjustments.
Once you happy with your stitched sample, go for the real thing.
Fill the surface with the stitches till you love the result. I changed colors halfway.

Maintenant que la base a été créée, nous pouvons enfin commencer à coudre.

Il vous faudra monter une aiguille à grande ouverture (aiguille topstitch).

J’ai utilisé un fil métallique dans l’aiguille et un fil très fin (fil lingerie) dans la canette.

Monter un pied de biche style pied à appliqué (j’aime voire ce que je fait !)

Choisissez le point décoratif qui vous emballe le plus, personnellement j’ai choisi un point à courbe avec un accent ‘candlewicking’.

Si nécessaire, adaptez la tension. Pour cela, il vous faudra coudre un échantillon.

Une fois satisfaite du résultat, allez-y : foncez, enfin, façon de parler.

Remplissez la surface de points décoratifs comme vous le ressentez. J’ai changé de couleur de fil métallique à la moitié.

Take you heatgun and zap the surface randomly.

Utilisez votre pistolet à chaleur et faites fondre le feutre de façon aléatoire.

My collage work is taking form.

After adding some paint and fancy stitches,

I decided to add some embroidered words on the surface.

J’ai décidée de broder des mots sur la surface.

I absolute love the poems by Jacques Prévert and Paul Verlaine.

I found it logical to choose a poem from each.

Paul Verlaine et Jacques Prévert font partis de mes poètes préférés.

Ce n’est que logique d’arrêter mon choix sur leurs poèmes.

Of course, I had to add some of my words.

Je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher d’ajouter mes mots.

Inspiration sources – Sources d’inspiration

Where do we find our inspiration?

At first: near us, our living space.

We record an invaluable among of information and store it in our brains.

Most of that information directly goes to our brain bin!

But sometime, there you have it: your next project idea: representing something from your all-day environment!

Où trouvons-nous notre inspiration?

En premier lieu : à coté de nous, notre habitacle.

Nous ‘enregistrons’ un nombre incalculable d’information dans le cerveau.

La plupart de ces informations vont ‘direct à la poubelle de nos souvenirs puisque ‘sans intérêt’ !

Mais de temps à autre : la voilà : l’idée pour un nouveau projet représentant quelque chose de la vie quotidienne !

We also see a lot from nature and we take pictures to remember that nature.

Again we record what we see.

Mostly those pictures are left as they are.

Nous voyons également beaucoup dans la nature et prendre des photos est une façon de se souvenir de cette nature. Beaucoup de ces photos sont laisser telles quelles.

But you can put the pictures in a folder on your computer or print them out and put them in an album where you mostly will take a further look.

I took the habit to store my pictures in well defined folders and print some of them out to glue them in my inspiration/sketchbook.

Mais, les photos peuvent être triées dans des bibliothèques créées sur l’ordinateur.

Les photos peuvent être imprimées et collées dans l’album photo traditionnelle. La famille et les amis seront invités à les regarder et après 1 mois : l’album est rangé pour ne plus être regardé.

Personnellement j’ai pris l’habitude d’imprimer et de coller les photos les plus intéressantes dans notre carnet d’inspiration et d’esquisses.

Next we also are influenced by the existing artwork. Even Picasso painted some of his most well-known work being influenced by other great masters.

Nous sommes également influencés par les œuvres d’art. Même Picasso a peint quelques de ses œuvres les plus célèbres en étant influencé par les grands maitres.

It is not because you are “influenced by“ that you have to copy it literally. You have the possibility to take it further, so take that opportunity!

For example: go for a detail!

Ce n’est pas parce que nous sommes ‘influencés par’ que nous copions littéralement. Nous avons la possibilité d’aller ‘plus loin’ ; de développer un détail, par exemple.

You also have the possibility to follow workshops – live or online – to learn a technique and – mostly – to know how a teacher records his/her experimentations.

When I follow a workshop I rarely make the work given by the teacher. I make samples of the technique, with a little review, and store those in my technique/inspiration book.

Nous avons l’opportunité de suivre des cours de toutes sortes - à l’académie ou en ligne – pour développer un centre d’intérêt, apprendre une nouvelle technique et - le plus important dans mon cas personnel- : apprendre comment l’enseignant transmet son savoir. Quand je suis un cours, je copie rarement l’œuvre à reproduire. Je fabrique des exemples et je fais quelques annotations dans mon carnet d’idées textile.

Dans ce même carnet, j’ai ajouté des pages avec les points cousus de ma machine à coudre.

I find it useful to have a VISUAL and a TOUCHABLE record. I need to see and touch!

Most of you have seen that I love to take step-by-step pictures. This is also a way to record the “how did I do this again?”

Je trouve très utile d’avoir des carnets références : le fait de VOIR et TOUCHER est important.

Entre temps vous savez également que je prends beaucoup de photos pas-à-pas.

Ceci est une façon comme une autre de se souvenir.

Past Friday I signed an agreement with Bernina to write on their freshly started Dutch blog.

So when I wrote a few months ago that I wouldn’t add Dutch to my bi-lingual blog I couldn’t possible dream that I would do it for Bernina.

Pistolet à chaleur

Note : utiliser le papier de cuisson pour protéger votre table de repassage et votre fer.

Note bis : prenez les mesures nécessaires pour réaliser ce projet en toute sécurité.

Part one/première partie:

Paint the steam-a-seam in different colours and let it dry overnight.

Peindre le vlies-o-fix en utilisant différentes couleurs et laisser sécher une nuit.

Iron the painted steam-a-seam on one side of the felt and the interfacing on the other side, using the baking paper to protect your iron.

Repassez le vlies-o-fix peint d’un coté du feutre et l’entoilage de l’autre côté en utilisant la feuille de cuisson pour protéger le fer.

Layer the angelina on the felt and iron, again using baking paper to protect your iron.

Déposez l’angelina sur le feutre et repassez en utilisant à nouveau le papier cuisson.

Take you organza, layer on the surface and iron, again with the baking paper.

Posez l’organza sur la surface et repassez, n’oubliez pas la feuille de cuisson.

After a small intermezzo, I have started a new project. Again in collage-style but with the intention to add some paint. I never really tried to add some painted accents on my fabric projects but, now is the time.

First, I have to sew all those pieces down. Therefore I will use some fancy threads and nice stitches.

Après une petite pause, j’ai entamé un nouveau projet. À nouveau un collage mais cette fois-ci j’ai l’intention d’ajouter de la peinture. Je n’ai jamais vraiment essayé d’illuminer mes œuvres avec de la peinture. C’est peut-être ‘maintenant ou jamais’.

Avant de trop me casser la tête avec la fin, je ferais mieux de penser à coudre tout ces bouts de tissu sur le tissu de base avec de jolis fils et des points décoratifs.

Challenges and keys – Défis et clefs

Ceci me semble le moment idéal pour montrer ce que j’ai fait du défit lancé par Shelagh:

Ce top, toujours pas fini, trainait depuis une éternité dans un tiroir. Sachant que je n’en ferai plus rien, j’ai décidé de l’utiliser comme arrière pour un autre top.

This top was, for some years now, in my drawer living his life as UFO.

I made the decision to use it as backing for another top.

I also worked a bit further – in fact, I’m finished – on Esterita’s door.

This is the wrong side of the top:

I find it important to have a neat wrong side. I cut all the threads and clean up the whole back.

J’ai également continué à m’amuser avec la porte d’Esterita – en fait, je l’ai carrément terminée !

La photo ci-dessus est l’arrière du top. Je trouve que l’arrière doit être aussi propre que l’avant. Alors je coupe tout les fils qui dépassent et retire les plus possible du papier stabilisant utilisé.

Un détail de la porte matelassée et d’une charnière :

A detail from the quilted door and the hinge:

I decided to finish this door in another way than the usual way thus,

I prepared the quilt to create a perfect satin stitched border.

I first sewed a straight stitch, then a stitched zigzag that just hit the straight stitch.

After that again a straight stitch, I went two times around. To finish I choose again a stitched zigzag.

At this stage only I cut the exceeded quilt fabric near the made stitch cluster.

Only after all those steps I did my satin stitch.

As a result, I have a flat border and a perfect satin stitch border.

J’ai voulu terminé cette porte d’une façon non-conventionnelle, donc…

J’ai préparé le quilt pour créer un bord satiné parfait.

Pour commencer, j’ai piqué un simple point droit, après j’ai choisi un point zigzag cousu qui touchait à peine le point droit. J’ai sélectionné le point droit et je suis passée 2 fois au dessus du zigzag. Pour terminé, j’ai repris le zigzag cousu.

C’est seulement après avoir cousu cet ensemble de points que j’ai coupé l’excédent du top matelassé juste à coté de cet ensemble.

La seule chose qui me restait à faire était coudre un bord au point satiné.

Résultat : un point satiné parfait et un bord parfaitement plat.

New Project - Nouveau projet

These are busy times for us. I even didn’t take the time to blog a bit.

Sorry therefore.

Combining an active professional life with a family life and an artistic life is like a walk on the edge of a precipice.

Cette période de l’année est généralement une des plus chargée. Combiner une vie professionnelle, familiale et artistique est comparable à une ‘promenade’ le long d’un précipice.

I managed to make some more pillowcases.
I love the result:
It’s the first time I have almost identical pillowcases.

J’ai quand même réussi à faire quelques housses de cousin supplémentaires.

C’est une première : je n’ai jamais fait un ensemble similaire. Toutes les housses de coussin précédentes étaient différentes les unes des autres.

I started a fused project from an Esterita Austin door design:

I had the design drawn on the background for 5 years. Yes, this was an unfinished just-started project.

J’ai ressorti un ancien travail : Un projet d’Esterita Austin. J’avais déjà dessiné la porte sur le tissu de fond il y a 5 ans. Il était temps que je continue ce travail entièrement collé.

Almost – Presque

Now, to combine and create a piece of art work with the three elements

Le défit lancé par Shelagh est arrivé à sa fin…

Quand à combiner et créer une œuvre avec ces trois pièces.

The golf theme quilt ist also almost finished. The binding has to be sewn on the last side.

I really enjoyed making this quilt.

I’m shooting a lot of golf pictures to make a second golf themed quilt. I really want to make a golf series.

For the First time, I used a madeira variegated quilt/embroidery thread in the needle and a monofilament thread in the bobbin to free motion quilt the border. I love that Madeira thread. That thread didn’t break once.

Ce quilt est presque terminé : encore coudre un côté du biais est il est fini !
J'ai vraiment envie de faire une série de quilt basé sur le golf.

J’ai utilisé un nouveau fil de ma collection : le madeira à broder et à quilter : fantastique ! Ce fil ne s’est pas cassé une seule fois.

The centre is finished, the border added and the top has been pinned to the batting and the background.
Now, the fun part starts: the quilting.

Le centre est fini, le bord a été cousu et le top a été épinglé au molleton et au dos.

Je peux commencer le matelassage, l’épisode le plus marrant débute !

Working and Sporting Week - Semaine de boulot et sportive

Past week, I did – after my working hours- a sport camp.

One whole week doing approaches, chipping and putting.

Of course as warm up, we had to hit the balls with our different irons, woods and driver.

Did I tell that the wind was blowing strong the coldest air possible?

Yesterday I did my first competition ever.

I never played as bad.

It seems to be normal.

But, next time will be better!

La semaine passée j’ai suivi- après mes heures de boulot- un stage de perfectionnement.

Une semaine entière à tenter de me perfectionner dans les approches et le putting.

Comme échauffement nous tapions des balles avec les fers, les bois et le driver.

Vous ai-je raconté que le vent était glacial ! Nous terminions nos soirées en glaçons.

Après ce stage j’ai joué ma toute première compétition.

Je n’ai jamais joué aussi mal.

Il parait que c’est normal après un stage.

Mais, la prochaine fois ce sera mieux !

Strong Lines – Traits épurés

Most of the time, you don’t need many details to recognize something or someone.

The association of an image with an object is made in a second.

I try to apply the same rules in my art : simple but strong lines: finding and keeping the spirit in a few lines.

Des fois, il ne faut pas beaucoup de détails pour reconnaître instantanément quelque chose ou quelqu’un.

L’association d’une image avec un objet se fait en un clin d’œil.

Dans ce que je crée, je recherche – la plupart du temps – des lignes simplifiées et épurées. Trouver et reproduire l’âme en quelques traits.

I just realized that when I was thinking I hadn’t a particular style in my art, I have my very own style. The subjects I choose are eclectic but my style is that I simplify the designs.

I create on my own level and try to explain the different steps I take as simple as possible.

I like to make my art as accessible as possible for everyone.

Je me suis réalisée récemment que, pensant que je n’avais pas un style particulier dans mes créations, j’ai mon style. Les sujets choisis sont éclectiques mais mon style consiste à simplifier mes représentations.

Je crée à mon niveau et j’essaye d’expliquer les étapes pour y arriver aussi simplement que possible.

J’aime que mon art soit accessible à tous.

Fresh Ideas – Inspiration retrouvée

I have two new workable ideas:

I worked a bit further on something I already made and…

J’ai retravaillé une idée et...

adapted a picture from last summer.

j’ai adapté une photo prise l’été passé.

I just don’t have a size-idea: large? Small? Both would work.

Je n’ai encore aucune idée du format. Petit ? Grand ?
Mes murs sont remplis ! Plus de place.

I also started a new face in my little moleskine.

La première couche de peinture d’un nouveau visage a été posée. Ce petit carnet de moleskine est tout simplement parfait pour ces essais.

Faces – Visages

In Alma's workshop, I'm playing with the Paynes Grey colour.
I tried to paint a face Alma's way.
Not easy!
But very funny!
J'ai tenté de peindre un visage à la façon d'Alma.

Pas facile!

Mais, très amusant!

I added a touch of violet on the lips.

J'ai ajouté une touche de violet sur les lèvres.

Second face is a magazine-face altered with Paynes Grey.

I know : those lips aren't right at all! She laughed with an open mouth and I changed that smile.

I can't paint teeth!

Ce visage a été réalisé à partir d'une phot de revue.

A nouveau avec cette fabuleuse couleur qu'est le Paynes Grey, un gris bleuté.

Je sais : les lèvres sont mal dessinées ! Elle souriait de toutes ses dents.

J'ai changé ce sourire éclatant tout simplement parce que je n'arrive pas à dessiner des dents.

New project – Nouveau projet

I made a new work this week and I wanted so much to be able to show some of it that I didn’t take the time to post my blog post yesterday.
Here is a picture of it in black and white. I often take pictures in B&W to see if the values are good. Here I created a diagonal.
J’ai créé une nouvelle œuvre la semaine passée. J’avais tellement envie de vous la montrer à peu près terminée que je n’ai pas pris/eu le temps d’écrire un petit mot pour mon blog. Avec un jour de retard, le voici.
Je vous montre d’abord une photo en noir et blanc. Je contrôle –la plupart du temps-la valeur de mes surfaces textiles de cette façon-là. Vous voyez la diagonale ?

La photo suivante est en couleurs cette fois-ci. J’aime travailler avec des couleurs similaires ! Après ce long hiver glacial j’ai voulu travailler avec des couleurs chaudes.
Tout les bouts de tissus on été appliqué avec un fil « métallic » au point bourdon.

With this colour picture you see that I worked with similar colours. After this ice-cold winter I wanted to work with warm colours.
After layering all the patches I satin stitched all the pieces with a metallic thread.
Once finished I chose an appropriate embroidery motif and started to machine embroider.

L’application de toutes ces pièces a quand-même pris plusieurs soirées. Une fois terminé, j’ai choisi un motif brodé adéquat et j’ai pu commencer la broderie machine.
Après quelques problèmes de tension due au fil choisi voici le résultat partiel :

I started to paint faces again !
J’ai recommencé à peindre des visages.

So, I’m doing two workshops at the same time.

Sharon Tomlinson’s : Faces, All Norah’s

Puisque le meilleur moyen d’apprendre, est de regarder les autres, je suis 2 cours en ligne.
Le premier étant celui de Sharon Tomlinson : Faces, All Norah’s

As you see : there’s a huge difference between the first layers and the last one.

Et comme vous pouvez vous en apercevoir, il y a une grande différence entre la première couche de peinture et la dernière.

The second workshop is Alma Stoller’s : Paynes gray portraits.
For Alma’s class, we have to mix our colours and use the exercise as background.

Le second cours est d’Alma Stoller : Paynes gray portraits.
Pour le cours d’Alma, je mélange plusieurs couleurs et j’utiliserai les exercises comme fond.

Pour l’instant, je me remets à dessiner.

Almost Spring - Presque le printemps !

After a long and very cold winter, spring is almost there.
Am I glad: I’m tired of the dark and rainy days.
I took this picture this morning: isn’t the colour of the sky beautiful?
Après un hiver long et froid, le printemps commence à pointer son nez.
Enfin ! Raz le bol de ce temps gris et maussade.
Vive le printemps (tiens : Michel Fugain). Que ce petit soleil fait du bien – hors du vent.
La photo ci-dessus a été prise ce matin au golf de Dunkerque.
Quel beau ciel, n’est-ce pas!

I finished sewing the women silhouettes with a satin stitch, using a blue metallic thread. I used the yellow lady as model.

J’ai terminée les contours de femmes. J’ai cousu le tout avec un fil métallique bleu.
Le gabarit jaune m’a servi de guide.

I have cut my work in four pieces.
The four parts will be ‘apart together’ once reassembled. You will see later.

J’ai découpé mon travail en quatre pièces qui vont être réassemblées par après. Vous allez le voir plus tard.

Tomorrow, we will be married for 24 years. I can’t believe time has passed that fast.

I hadn’t had time to sew this week but I was able to start my silhouettes this morning.It is my intention to sew many of those women.

Those are the souvenirs from the places I once was, except for the green/blue one.My daughter brought it back from her trip to Tunisia.

Silence

Since the new year began, I haven’t been blog-active.
The reason why?
My eldest daughter has made an important decision: loose weight!
She started with the Weight Watchers and asked me to support her and come with her to the meetings every week.
Her goal is to lose 30 kg (is this 60 pounds?). She has lost 9 kg already!
Since I can’t do it all, my creative hours are reduced to a minimum for the moment.

Depuis le début de l’année je n’ai pas été très active.
La raison ?
Ma fille ainée a pris une décision : perdre du poids !
Elle s’est inscrite au WeightWatcher et m’a demandée de l’accompagner aux réunions.
Son but ? Perdre 30 kilo. Elle en a déjà perdu 9. Comme je ne peux pas être partout à la fois mes heures créatives ont été réduites au minimum.

My creative hours being reduced doesn't meen I'm not creative at all. It just take more time to make and show you the progresses.
Ce n’est pas parce que je n’ai que peu de temps que je n’essaye pas d’être créative !
Cela dure simplement plus longtemps avant d’avoir quelque chose à vous montrer.

This is my collage so far.
Now I’m ready to add some stitches contours, I was thinking about women silhouettes. The already created boxes are our homes.

J’en suis arrivée jusqu’ici avec collage :
J’avais pensé coudre des contours de silhouettes de femmes. Les rectangles déjà réalisés représentent nos maisons.

Fabric Scraps - Chutes de tissus

I continued playing on this UFO.
I added some black/orange fabric strips and used orange thread to apply the strips on the background.
Still looks like nothing but it‘s coming.
Je continue à m’amuser avec ce top toujours pas fini.
J’ai utilisé un fil orangé pour appliquer des bandes de tissu bicolore (noir et orange).
Ça ne ressemble toujours à rien mais ça vient !

Une nouvelle idée a germée.
Encore avec de petites chutes de tissus, et oui, j’en ai beaucoup.

Les fils métalliques rangés dans un vide-poche en broderie dentelle(une de mes réalisations) que attendent d’être utilisés.

This is the first stage:

An organza fabric was pinned over the scraps.

Then I sewed a grid with a metallic thread

I used a heat gun to distress the surface

Challenge – continued ## Défit – suite

Photographing organza – and obtaining a good result - is an almost impossible task.
But, this is my result so far from Shelagh’s challenge n° 3.
Réussir des photos avec de l’organza est pratiquement impossible.
Mais, voici un résultat partiel du défit organisé par Shelagh.

Is there enough stitching or should there be more?
On one hand, I consider I stitched enough because I still want to see the skeleton leaves and the embellished ribbons and on the other hand my stitching is slightly out of balance.
Since I know we will do more playing with this surface, I will stop stitching.

How much is enough?

Y-a-t-il assez de points ou en faut-il plus ?
D’un côté, j’estime qu’il y en a assez puisque je veux voir la surface originale avec les feuilles et les rubans.

D’un autre point de vue, on pourrait dire que l’équilibre du travail n’est pas vraiment respecté.
Comme je sais que nous allons encore jouer avec cette surface, il vaut mieux que je m’arrête.

I’m working on several UFO’s. Still a resolution from 2009 but I decided that for 2010 this was still a good one.
When I was on an exhibition quite some years ago, I bought two ‘Stef Francis’ embroidery kits. I started them but….didn‘t finish them. It’s a pity not to continue working on them.
I’m first embroidering the rusty one and then I have the blue one to work on.
Je travaille sur plusieurs travaux ‘en attente’. Ma résolution de 2009 est toujours actuelle : achever mes travaux à moitié terminés.
Il y a plusieurs années, j’avais acheté deux kits de Stef Francis. Je les avais commencé mais pas terminé. Ce serai vraiment triste de ne pas les finir.
Une fois terminé la broiderie ‘rouille’, je m’attelerai à la broderie ‘bleue’.

While searching for those kits I found those again.The first one is a machine needle case.

En mettant de l’ordre dans mes affaires j’ai ressorti ces deux petits travaux:

The embellished crazy block is a future pillow case.I just have to make the pillow case.

Well those pages are coming to life. Slowly but steady.The biggest challenge was to find the dog pictures. Now that I gathered all those, I’m surprised: we took more pictures of Avril that I thought!

The bad news: I still didn’t start the body-challenge. I have an idea but I have difficulties to translate it on paper. I don’t see this as a failure but as a normal step in my creativity.

1% idea and 99% hard ‘work’ in expanding that idea.

Challenges - Défis

I finally was able to start the different challenges.
The first one being that from the ‘threeCreativeStudio’.
The theme for January/February is:
Puzzle.
I had a remain from a previous work that will be perfect to use.
Finalement j’ai enfin eu la possibilité de me mettre à l’œuvre. J’ai eu le temps de penser et de créer mes défis.
Le premier étant celui de ‘ThreeCreativeStudio’.
Le sujet choisi pour les mois de janvier et février est : ‘puzzle’.
Il me reste encore une surface d’un travail ancien qui me semble parfaite pour retravailler.

Comme nous ne sommes pas sensées de montrer le travail fini avant la fin du mois de février, je ne résiste pas à la tentation de vous montrer un détail :

Since we’re not supposed to show the end result before the end of February…I will only show a sneak view.

The second challenge I’m in, is one from Shelagh. It’s the third time I’m joining her adventure. It’s still time to take part of it : She’s accepting challengers till end January!

Time is flying! I promised to post past week but didn’t have the time to do anything creative or almost. My professional live has won the battle past week.
But…

Le temps file! J’avais promis des photos mais je n’ai pas eu le temps d’être créative ou presque ! Ma vie professionnelle a gagné la bataille la semaine passée.
Mais…

This is the first pouch, meant to protect a GPS.My oldest daughter asked for a GPS-protection to put in her handbag. I first made this one, but she didn’t like it.
Ceci est la première pochette pour GPS. Ma fille ainée m’avait demandée une pochette pour protéger son GPS quand elle le met dans son sac à main. J’avais d’abord fait la pochette bleue mais elle ne l’aimait pas.

With the surface I still had I made my agenda cover.

Avec la surface travaillée j’ai crée une protection pour mon agenda.

I used gel medium to glue the felt on the moleskine-cover.
Then I used my heat-gun to melt some bits of the surface.

J’ai collé le feutre sur la couverture de mon moleskine.
J’ai utilisé mon pistolet à chaleur pour faire fondre certaines parties du feutre.

Since I still had to make a pouch for my daughter, I let her choose the surface to work on and the colours.The red and green pouch is the result and she likes it.

Il me restait à faire la pochette pour ma fille ainée. Je lui ai demandée de choisir la surface et les couleurs. Elle a choisi le rouge et le vert. Tout simplement.

I made this cover for a very special heart thief.

I mixed the two with my embellisher

Something different - Quelque chose d’autre

I wanted to make something completely different.
I went on a blog-trip and remembered this blog : Dispatch from La.
Mary Ann has a new workshop : Remains of the day. I decided to jump into that workshop. And I have fun !
She’s combining all different techniques to make a souvenir journal.
It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t add my personal touch in my journal.
To create my cover I used curtain fabric, silk, sheer, Lutradur and trims, all sewn together with one blue thread using fancy machine stitches.
J’avais envie de faire quelque chose de tout à fait différent.
Je me suis balladée dans mes blogs et je me suis souvenue de celui-ci :
Dispatch from La.
Mary Ann a un nouveau cours : Remains of the day.
Ayant l’air attrayant, je me suis dit : pourquoi pas ? En fait, je m’amuse !
Mary Ann combine plusieurs techniques différentes pour créer son journal souvenir.
Ce ne serait pas moi, si je n’y mettais pas mon cachet.
Pour créer la couverture de mon journal, j’ai utilisé du tissu de tentures, de la soie, de l’organza, de la dentelle et des rubans. J’ai cousu le tout avec une seule couleur de fil à broder (du bleu, je n’avais pas envie de changer le fil), utilisant les points décoratifs de ma machine à coudre.

The signatures were made by all kind of stuff.

Les pages sont un ramassis de toutes sortes de papier.

The signatures are completed but not yet attached to the cover.

Les pages me plaisent et n’attendent qu’à être attachées à la couverture.

Blue Forest – Forêt Bleue

I’m sorry I didn’t talked with you lately but…
I have an excellent excuse !
I absolutely wanted to finish my Blue Forest before Christmas.
It’s done, completely finished with label and all.
The label says :
Not seeing the tree thru the forest
Created and made by me and the title of my work : Blue Forest.

Je suis désolée de ne pas avoir pris le temps de vous parler.
J’ai une très bonne excuse !
Je voulais ABSOLUMENT finir ma forêt bleue avant noël.
Ma forêt bleue est tout à fait terminée, finie.
Les fils ont été coupés ; l’étiquette est appliquée, bref : Tout à fait FINI.

I added some detail shots of the quilting.
On the sides I added some figures. They evoked –for me- the spirit of the forest.
On top and bottom I added some feather swirls to remember the birds in a forest.

Je ne pouvais pas m’empêcher de tirer quelques photos détaillées du matelassage,
Sur les côtés j’ai ajouté des figures me rappelant les esprits d’une forêt millénaire.
Sur les bords du dessus et du dessous des plumetis frivoles évoquant les oiseaux, maîtres de la forêt.

As you can see : I added not 1 but 2 borders : a dark blue and a blue/purple one.
I quilted with a variegated thread (King tut from Superior Threads, color 938). This thread IS fantastic. I also free motioned with it and it broke only 2 or 3 times.
I always use a topstitch needle size 90 when quilting.
And my quilting gloves.
And nice music : the new Norah Jones.
Perfect.

En fin de compte j’ai ajouté deux bords : un étroit bleu foncé et un plus large tirant sur le mauve/pourpre.
Pour le matelassage j’ai utilisé un fil multi-couleurs ((King tut from Superior Threads, color 938). Ce fil est fantastique. En matelassage main-libre il n’a cassé que deux ou trois fois.
Pour le matelassage, je n’utilise que les aiguilles ‘top stitch 90’.
Et mes gants à matelasser.
Et de la musique relaxante : le nouveau Norah Jones.
Tout simplement : Parfait.

Blue forest - forêt bleue

Yesterday, Ellen asked me different questions about this work.
First of all :
This is a snapshot of an image in my mind. I made a detailed sketch of it in my journal and found the drawing strong enough to execute in fabric.
This is also a proverb I will try to translate : “Between de forest you can’t see the tree.”
I will let you all think about the meaning of it. But, I see it as a milestone in my life.
If I had to choose my most important fabric works, this one would certainly be part of my top 5.
The size of my blue trees so far is: 24x 20inch.
I don’t know if I will add a border, sometimes it’s a yes, sometimes it’s a no.
I let this work dialogue with me. Strange feeling !

Hier, Ellen m’a posée plusieurs questions concernant ma forêt bleue.

Commençons par le début :
Ce travail est comme une photo polaroïd d’une image dans ma tête. J’ai fait une esquisse détaillée dans mon journal et j’ai trouvé le résultat assez fort pour la réaliser en tissue.
C’est également un proverbe qu’ « à travers la forêt on ne voit plus l’arbre. »
Vous faites la déduction que vous voulez, mais pour moi ce fut un tournant important dans ma vie.
Si j’avais à choisir 5 travaux textiles importants, celui-ci ferait parti du top 5.
La dimension de ce travail jusqu’à présent : 60 x 40 cm.
Je n’ai pas encore décidé si j’ajoute un bord ou non.
Entre ce travail et moi s’est installé un dialogue. Très étrange !

I wanted to write down a recipe my father gave some time ago.This is the background I created to write it down

I tried to write it down using a calligraphy letter style.
Not easy ! Not easy at all !
J’ai essayé de l’inscrire en calligraphie.

I also continued sewing on the blue trees :
I outlined the trees in a dark, dark blue and some purple.

J’ai également ajouté quelques détails à mon sous-bois bleu.

To tell you : I had a Fantastic time.
If you have the opportunity to visit Brussels : go to the museum René Magritte.
You will not regret it. This is truly a museum of a higher standard. The explanation we received during our almost 3-hours visit was outstanding.
Pour vous dire : ce fût Fabuleux !
Si, à l’occasion vous visitez Bruxelles, le musée René Magritte est un incontournable ! Les explications reçues durant notre visite d’a peu près 3 heures furent plus qu’excellentes.

Tutorial Logcabin goes green Logcabin se met au vert

Different ladies asked me to explain the making of my log cabin goes green.Well, here it is:
Plusieurs dames m’ont demandé comment j’avais fait mon ‘log cabin se met au vert’.
Alors, on y va :
For the making of this quilt:
Use your large scraps, I only used greens and fabric I “didn’t love” anymore…
You can also use the jelly rolls.

Pour la réalisation de ce quilt il faut:
…ce qu’on veut, c'est-à-dire : j’ai utilisé des restes, uniquement des tissus verts et des tissus qui ne me plaisait plus.
On peut également utiliser des ‘jelly rolls’.

For the first “go green quilt” I have cut my strips on 2 ½ inch, the full length of the fabric I used.

Pour le quilt ci-dessus, j’ai découpé mes bandes de tissus- sur toute la longueur- d’une largeur de 6 cm.

For the second “go green quilt” I have cut the strips on 3 inch.

Pour le quilt ci-dessous, les bandes avaient une largeur de 7.5 cm.

You see: it’s flexible.
Vous voyez : on fait ce qu’on veut.

You need to make a total of 27 light coloured blocks
Il faut faire un total de 27 blocs clairs

and 27 dark coloured blocks.
et de 27 blocs foncés.

I will not explain how to make this block as I’m assuming you capable of sewing a ‘normal’ log cabin. (I used the strip piecing method)
If you have a closer look at the blocks above you will know how to.

Je ne vais pas expliquer comment assembler ce bloc puisque je suppose que vous êtes toutes capables de coudre un log cabin classique. (j’ai utilisé la méthode d’assemblage en chaine)
Si vous étudiez les blocs ci-dessus vous allez savoir comment les coudre.

I also give you a blank diagram for you to print out, this way you can colour it as you wish.

J’ai également ajouté un diagramme pour que vous puissiez le colorier comme vous voulez.

Blue - Bleu

Lately I live my life in blue. I have added the blue borders on my blue baltimore.
This top is ready to be quilted !
Ces derniers temps, je vis ma vie en bleu !
J’ai ajouté les bords bleus à mon baltimore et il est –enfin- prêt à être matelassé.

I also continued to add layers on my blue canvas :

I added some glitter paint but I don’t like it.

J’ai utilisé de la peinture à paillettes mais ce n’est pas une réussite !

Wash 5:
I painted over the glitter paint with another dark blue paint.
I like it again.

J’ai couvert la couche de peinture à paillettes avec un bleu foncé.
La surface commence à me plaire vraiment.

I also painted some mulberry tree bark :
I will glue some pieces on the surface of my canvas.

J’ai également peint de l’écorce de mûrier. J’ai très envie de coller quelques bouts sur la surface bleue.

Colours - Couleurs

I love colour – any colour. I love the variety you have in one colour and now and then I make a mono chromatic work. For my glued work I chose blue and its shades.
So far I added a first layer of light blue with my caran d’ache crayons.
As you can see, this first wash toned this work quite a bit.
I’m satisfied of the effect because it was a ‘jump’ in ‘not really knowing what would happen’. I prefer to add one blue-layer at the time: I want that the surface completely dries before adding the new layer.
J’aime la couleur – toutes les couleurs. J’adore la variété et la chaleur que possède la couleur.
C’est la raison pour laquelle –de temps à autre– je crée un travail monochromatique.
Pour mon travail collé j’ai choisi le bleu.
Jusqu’à présent je n’ai ajouté qu’une première couche d’un bleu clair en utilisant mes crayons aquarellable de caran d’ache.
La première couche a déjà fortement atténué mon travail.
Je peux ajouter que je suis satisfaite du résultat jusqu’à présent : Je ne savais pas vraiment à quoi m’attendre. Je n’ajouterai qu’une couche bleu par soirée puisqu’il vaut mieux que la surface soit tout à fait sèche avant d’en ajouter une nouvelle.

I also chose blue for my ‘blue forest’.So far the layers are only stitched to stay on their place, no less no more.

J’ai également choisi le bleu pour mon ‘bois bleu’.
Toutes les couches ont été cousues pour rester en place, ni plus, ni moins.

I believe I have been influenced by René Magritte for my use of blue.
In two weeks my youngest daughter and I will visit the Magritte Museum and House in Brussels. It’s her 20st birthday present.
we will also visit other museum, have some long walks in the historic centre and do the ‘art nouveau’ walk. I promise you a lot of pictures !

Je suppose que j’ai été influence par René Magritte.
Dans deux semaines, ma plus jeune fille et moi, nous nous rendons à Bruxelles ‘en touristes’. Elle voulait un cadeau unique pour son 20ème anniversaire.
Nous irons visiter le nouveau musée Magritte et la maison Magritte.
Puisque nous y serons pour le weekend nous visiterons d’autres musées en plus des nombreuses ballades prévues – entre autre la balade ‘art nouveau’.

I started my blue forest. As you can see without a blue spot for the moment but this will be changed soon. I only used scraps so far.
J’ai commence la réalisation du ‘sous-bois bleu’. Comme vous pouvez le voire : sans bleu pour l’instant mais cela changera rapidement. Je n’ai utilisé que des chutes de tissus.

This picture is from a workshop – Sticky fingers - given by Ellen Lindner. As the title says : you get sticky fingers from it. I now have to wait till the surface dried.
Cette photo est la première phase d’un cours donné par Ellen Lindner : doigts collants. Et, comme le nom du cours le dit : les doigts collent ! Maintenant il ne me reste qu’à attendre que la surface sèche.

Baltimore UFO

Since I’m in the middle of finishing old works, I went on old UFO-hunt and I remembered this jewel: a classic Baltimore.
Une de mes résolutions de 2009 était de terminer, enfin, de vieux travaux.En fouinant j’ai retrouvé ce trésor : le plus classique des classiques : un Baltimore

I now remember the evenings sewing these blocks, sometimes needing two pair of glasses because I was so “stupid” to choose a dark blue background.
I also remember how proud I was when I finished the 16 blocks, all sewn by hand.
And now I have a partial top without borders.
I know I will not make the borders by hand.
But I don’t want to add machine appliqué –borders. Why not : have a detail look : you can’t see the hand stitches.

Je me souviens maintenant des soirées passées à coudre ces blocs – à la main – de temps en temps il me fallait deux paires de lunettes tout simplement parce que j’avais été assez bête de choisir un fond foncé.
Je me souviens également de la fierté que j’ai éprouvée après avoir fini ces 16 blocs.
Et maintenant je me retrouve avec ce top toujours pas fini !
Je sais que je n’appliquerai plus les bords à la main.

Mais, je ne veux pas de bords appliqué à la machine.

Pourquoi pas ? Regardez la photo, on ne voit même pas mes points.

Thus I have one option left: adding a feather quilted border. This will be machine quilted because my hands can’t quilt anymore.

Il ne me reste qu’une option: ajouter un bord matelassé assez élaboré, et il devra être fait à la machine, mes mains ne pouvant plus matelasser.

Curves - Courbes

I plan a give-away, starting in January 2010.
This is a quilt I made – 10 years ago now – and only finished yesterday.
The blocks were sewn by hand, the quilt is machine quilted.
This was the last work I did by hand.
My intention is to give one pattern of this sampler in the beginning of each month.
Those blocks are my design and – except for the central compass – they all have curves in it.
I will only send the pattern to those asking for it in the comment. The next block will only be send to those posting the finished block on their blog. I think it’s a fair deal since I don’t ask to be paid for the many hours I spend to draw those blocks.
À partir de janvier 2010 j’ai dans l’intention d’offrir les blocs de mon sampler en courbes.
J’ai commencé à coudre ce sampler il y a à peu près 10 ans et je ne l’ai terminé que hier.
Les blocs ont été cousus à la main, le matelassage à été fait à la machine.
C’est la dernière fois que j’ai fait un travail à la main.
Les petits blocs ont été crées/dessinés par moi et contiennent tous des courbes.
J’offrirai un bloc par mois – uniquement à celles qui me le demandent en laissant un commentaire. Le bloc suivant sera envoyé à celles qui mettront une photo du bloc dans leur blog. Je trouve que c’est un bon arrangement compte tenu que je ne demande pas à être payée pour les patrons de ces blocs.

Log Cabin Continued - Suite

I finished the second “log cabin go green”.
I quilted this one in the ditch since this will be an everyday quilt to use when looking at the television.
J’ai terminé le second “log cabin se met au vert’.
J’ai matelassé celui-ci dans la couture puisqu’il va être utilisé -et usé- en regardant la télévision.

One of my goals for 2009 was : finishing what I started. Well, I succeed till now, still 6 weeks to go but I don’t see why I wouldn’t get my goal.

Une de mes intentions pour 2009 était de terminer tout ce que je commencerais.
Jusqu’à présent : c’est un succès ! Et je ne vois aucune raison de faillir dans les 6 dernières semaines de l’année.

I only have to quilt a few blocks from the Log Cabin I made for my eldest daughter.
I was in such a serious quilt drive Sunday that my neck was a bit painful.
I hope to finish the quilting this evening and to prepare the binding ready to be sewn.
Il ne me reste plus que quelques blocs à matelasser du Log Cabin que je fais pour ma fille ainée.
Dimanche, je me suis crue sur le circuit du Mans. Le matelassage se faisait ‘comme tout seul’. Mon cou et mes épaules étaient un peu engourdis en début de soirée – j’ai pris la -sage- décision de m’arrêter.
J’espère pouvoir terminer le matelassage ce soir et préparer le bord de finition.

After the workshop Textures Surfaces from Lynda and Carol I took past year, I enrolled for a follow-up workshop ‘Simply Salt’. I was curious, very curious !
Well, I finally worked with Lutradur – never used it although I had it in the house for about a year, gesso, ink and salt.
It was messy ! And I just love a clean playing area…
The gesso dried rather quickly but the ink…

Cela fait à peu près un an que j’ai suivie un cours en ligne ‘Textured Surfaces’ de Lynda et Carol.
Elles ont eu la lumineuse idée d’écrire une mini suite – ‘Simply Salt’ – ‘du sel, tout simplement’ - à ce cours.
L’occasion était toute trouvée pour utiliser le Lutradur acheté l’année passée.
Le but étant de ‘créer’ une nouvelle surface avec le Lutradur, le gesso, l’encre et…du gros sel.
C’est dingue ce que j’ai du faire attention pour ne pas faire trop de tache, l’encre étant permanente ! Et…j’aime la propreté, ce qui est plutôt ennuyeux quand on travaille avec de la couleur sous n’importe quelle forme.

Huge Quilt - Grand Quilt

It’s large. It’s HUGE to quilt !
I didn’t want to set the Hand Quilter up and I regret it. This quilt is not easy handle.This is the top, before the batting and the back were pinned together :

Je n’avais pas envie de monter le Handi Quilter et je commence à le regretter.

I’m curious to know the weight of it : my shoulder are tired because I have to sew and hold the quilt.

It was my intention to use this top as back for another quilt, but my oldest daughter asked to make a quilt of that particular back for her.
Now, I have to finish two quilts instead of one.

En premier lieu ce top devait être l’arrière d’un autre travail mais ma fille ainée m’a demandée d’en faire un quilt à part entière.
Maintenant, j’ai à finir deux quilts au lieu d’un seul !

This is the reason I didn't blog this week :
I had an important meeting with a missed golfball !
And I spare you the most impressive : this is a picture I took after 3 days.
And no, it doesnt' hurt. I only asked the doctor to sew the best he could.
Ceci est la raison de mon absence : une rencontre imprévue et intempestive avec une balle de golf ratée !
Je vous ai épargné le pire, la photo a été prise après 3 jours. Et non, ça ne me fait pas mal.

Log Cabin Continued - Suite

I started the Construction of the back of the log Cabin.
I did the same design as on the front !
Yes, indeed, more squaring.
I wanted to show you the back of one of the blocks :
J’ai entamé la construction du dos de mon log cabin.
J’ai décidé de coudre le dos du quilt de la même façon que le devant.
Et oui, encore plus d’ajustements !
J’ai photographié l’envers d’un bloc et le résultat de l’ajustement des 56 blocs.

And the result of the squaring of 56 blocks :

Even the most perfect sewing machine is handled by a human –

by definition : not perfect.
So, please DO SQUARE !

I squared for more than one hour !
And please : forget about the ‘scant ¼ inch seam.
Sew the seam you want
BUT ….
be consistent .
I sewed my block with a 1 cm = 3/8 inch seam.
It’s much more comfortable and since it will not be hand quilted but machine quilted,

the seam largeness isn’t that important.

Même la machine à coudre la plus perfectionnée est manipulée par un humain –

par définition : pas parfait.
Alors S.V.P. :

prenez le temps qu’il faut pour l’ajustement de tous les blocs : ça m’a pris plus d’une heure !
Et encore : oubliez le ½ cm de couture.
Cousez la couture à la largeur qui vous convient le mieux.
MAIS…
Soyez conséquente !
Moi je couds mes coutures à 1 cm.
C’est plus pratique et comme mes quilts ne sont pas matelassés à la main mais à la machine, la largeur des coutures n’a pas vraiment d’importance !

Log Cabin

I continued working on the log cabin.
I had cut 7 lights and 7 darks strips, 2 inch large.
J’ai continué à travailler à mon log cabin.
J’avais découpé 7 bandes de tissus clairs et 7 bandes de tissus foncés sur une largeur de 5 cm.

This is a repetitive work and it’s what I needed.

C’est un travail répétitif et c’est ce donc j’avais envie.
Je n’avais pas envie de réfléchir, juste envie de rêver et m’échapper un peu de la réalité.

I didn’t want to think, I wanted to dream and have a little escape from the reality.

So I sewed, ironed and….squared my blocks.

Alors, j’ai cousu, repassé et …ajusté mes blocs.
Pourquoi avais-je oublié ce travail fastidieux mais incontournable ?

Pas seulement l’ajustement d’un top fini mais l’ajustement de 72 blocs !
Ce n’était pas ça que je recherchais comme travail répétitif mais, bon…
J’ai cousu, repassé et ajusté tout mes blocs.

Why didn’t I remember the squaring ?

Not the squaring of an almost finished work but the squaring of EVERY 72 blocks ?

That wasn’t the repetitive work I searched for but…

I’m done. I sewed, ironed and squared all my blocks.

Now I arranged the blocks in the wanted layout and I will sew them together to make my top.

J’ai arrangé mes blocs comme je le voulais et je peux commencer à coudre.
Ma surprise fut grande quand je me suis aperçue du peu de tissu qu’il m’a fallut pour réaliser ces blocs. J’avais espéré diminuer de façon significative ma quantité de tissus, mais non, je ne vois même pas la différence !
Je compte encore ajouter 2 bords : un bord de la largeur d’une bande, l’autre de la largeur d’un bloc.

I was surprised about the little quantity of fabric I needed. I wanted to reduce my stash but I don’t even see a difference.
I will add a small border, the size of a strip and then a larger border, the size of the block.

One of the reasons I made a ‘classic’ quilt is this :
My very first quilt ever, ever is not any more. It’s been so used to keep us warm and comfortable while watching TV or reading a book. I hope this new quilt will be as popular as my first quilt.

Je voulais refaire un quilt ‘classique’ parce-que mon tout premier quilt est usé jusqu’à la trame. Il a été tellement utilisé comme couverture/plaid par nous tous pour regarder la télé ou lire un livre. Nous étions tous emmitouflés dessous. J’espère que le nouveau quilt sera aussi populaire que l’ancien.

Second Try- Seconde Tentative

I always write my blog in Word first and then copy and paste to blogger.
Well my computer decided to shut down and I lost everything I already wrote down.

I made a second cell phone pouch – in red this time :
And again I gave it to a friend who adored it a lot.
I don’t know why everyone loves them, besides being unique there’s nothing special about them.

Après quelques problèmes d’ordinateur, me voilà capable de travailler à nouveau à l’ordinateur.
Je me suis faite une deuxième pochette pour mon portable – en rouge cette fois-ci.

À nouveau, j’en ai fait cadeau à une amie faisant plus que l’admirer.

Je ne comprends pas vraiment cet engouement pour ces pochettes ;

à par être unique en leur genre.

I hadn’t a lot of time this week to make time to blog.
I sketched/doodled a bit, looking for a good idea for a new fibre work:
I made a blue page using the newspaper my eldest daughter used for protecting the gifts from her holiday in Tunisia.

I love that alphabet !

Je n’ai pas pris le temps d’écrire sur mon blog ayant préféré dessiner.
J’ai fait une page bleu avec du papier journal ramené de Tunisie par ma fille ainée.

J’adore l’alphabet arabe.
J’ai également cherché à faire quelques gribouillis symétriques :

Au lieu d’utiliser du coton, je pourrai utiliser de l’organza et travailler en transparence.

I doodled some ideas but instead of using cotton fabric, I could use organza and work in shadows and transparencies.

While walking with the dog between some trees, thinking about Mark Chagall, I sketched this once I was home again :

Au gré d’une promenade dans les sous-bois avec mon chien, pensant à Mark Chagall,

j’ai dessiné quelques arbres bleus une fois rentrée à la maison.

I made a second sketch using a painted background.
While the paint was still wet, I doodled some spirals with a little toothpick.

J’ai refait le dessin mais j’ai débuté avec un fond de peinture blanche dans laquelle j’ai dessiné des spirales avec un cure-dents.

I exercised a bit more on faces in Modigliani style, I just coloured the mouth to accentuate the pale face. I like this : keeping only the essential.
Je m’exerce encore toujours à dessiner des visages, cette fois-ci – une fois de plus- dans le style de Modigliani. J’aime accentuer la bouche et réduire à l’essentiel les traits d’un visage gardé pâle.

When I was in Ste Marie aux Mines I found the bark of a mulberry tree,
It was the first time I saw it for real and not transformed yet.

I couldn’t let the opportunity to buy the unbleached and the bleached version.

À Ste Marie aux Mines j’ai eu l’occasion de trouver- et de voir pour la première fois - de l’écorce de murier.

Je n’ai pas su laisser passer l’occasion d’acheter la version non blanchie et blanchie.

I have cut a small piece of the bleached bark and used 3 Golden fluid acrylics paints and a tiny bit green glitter to obtain this result.
Since I gave the cell phone pouch (from a previous post) to a friend, I have to make a new one for me.

J’ai découpé une petite partie de l’écorce blanchie et je l’ai peinte avec de la peinture acrylique fluide de Golden et un soupçon de paillettes vertes.
Comme j’ai fait cadeau de ma pochette de portable, je m’en refais une.

When I was at the hair dresser in the beginning of the week I sketched a bit, I tried to draw a samurai, I want to make a Japanese themed work :

Language/langue Important !

Someone asked me, since I’m living in Belgium, if I wasn’t able to write in French – perhaps I lived on the Flemish side and wasn’t able to speak or understand French.
Well, French is my mother language AND I live in the most French corner on the Flemish side. To make something simple !
Having been writing for such a long time in English.... it feels like a second skin.
I will continue to write in English and I will add the French translation for all my French readers - my mom will be SO happy ! She will finally understand what I’m writing without having to ask for a translation to my dad.

Quelqu’un m’a récemment demandé pourquoi je n’écrivais pas mon blog en français puisque j’habite en Belgique. Habitant du coté flamant, je ne parlerai peut-être pas le français ? J’ai commencé à écrire ce blog en anglais parce que la plupart de mes lectrices et futures lectrices sont anglophones. Au fur et à mesure je me suis sentie plus à l’aise en écrivant en anglais. Je continuerai à écrire en anglais mais, à partir d’aujourd’hui, j’écrirai également en français. Ma maman va être enchantée : mon papa n’aura plus besoin de traduire mon texte. Je m’en tiendrai à ces deux langues – je parle le flamand et l’allemand également – autrement ce blog aura plus l’air d’un guide touristique ou d’un mode d’emploi européen !

Cell phone Pouch

While in Ste Marie aux Mines, I followed a little free workshop on the Husqvarna/pfaff boot.We were only six to follow the cell phone pouch workshop – I still don’t understand why we were so few -.
We received a kit to work with, I chose green :
Different materials were layered on the base.

The embellisher was used and after some time, I finished the pouch :

Big enough to put my cell phone in and my touch screen will suffer no more.
I showed the pouch to a friend and seeing that she loved it so much I gave it to her after shooting some pictures of the pouch. I’m so happy I made her happy.

Creativity Boost

I came back from Ste Marie aux Mines with a head full of ideas.

The exhibition was of a high, very high level.
Can’t help it but I much preferred the exhibition in St-Marie than in Houston.
It is probably because I more love innovating work/art rather than traditional quilts.
I have an immense respect for those who produce traditional handmade quilts because it’s time consuming.

I saw a retrospective from the Gee’s Bend quilts. I had the chance to receive an explanation from the delegated person. I was impressed because they’ve developed their own style of quilts.

I also had the chance to meet and talk with Sandra Meech-I only bought one book and it was hers- and Michael and Judith James. I was totally impressed by the work of Tiziana Tateo, an Italian artist. I talked a bit with her and she told me she had an exhibition in Belgium, not so far from my home, but I missed it and I’m sorry.

I can only say I was happy to have travelled to see all those art works on 21 different sites.
DH asked me if I had to choose one : Ste Marie or Houston, my answer is without a doubt : Ste Marie aux Mines.

We had a wonderful time. But it’s so good to be back home.

We first stopped in Honfleur to walk in the beautiful old town with the lovely old houses and streets and the many art galleries.
I had the chance to be able to take some pictures with a nice reflection on the water :

When walking in the small streets, you discover treasures : being able to take a look in the entrance of a porch normally closed and hidden to the view of the tourists.

Three flowers and 200 posts.

I never thought I would still know what to say after 200 posts but :

After the flower sketching from yesterday, I started to choose some fabric for my little project.
I layered the fabric in no time :
This time I added white tulle on the surface :

I stitched the whole surface with metallic thread. I was curious about using the background I made some weeks ago. I quickly auditioned the two together and decided to use both of them :

I carefully cut the background to avoid a lot of bulk :

I used a stitched zigzag to make the two pieces one. I used a dark blue metallic thread to make a transition between the purples from the center and the blues from the border.

After adding the backing, I quilted – again with a light blue metallic thread – with a vine stitch.

I just love this free appliqué way of work :
I’m able of using scraps.
It’s rather quick.
It’s freeing.
I can ‘let go’ and make my thing without a lot of stress.
It’ just what I need for the moment.

Long days

I’m so sorry I haven’t been able to be more creative and show you more. As I said in past blog posts : this has been some hectic months.

DH and me have decided to take a well deserved break next week : we’re going to Deauville, France. For us : only a 3.5 hours drive with the car.
It’s time we have some quality time. The past months we only lived for our shop.
Men always think they’re able to do it all. Women also…
Since we know – for 2 years now - DH has the disease of Parkinson, I have the impression we run after time.
That’s why we try to take more quality time. Simply enjoy our company.
Believe it or not : now we love each other, when we were just married not. Strange.

I haven’t done much : some doodling after seeing some work from Marc Chagall,
some sketches in preparation of another flower fabric collage :

and some flower stitch exercises. Didn’t made I some progress ?

I also enrolled in Terri’s faces workshop new version.

Sue and Terri had the luminous idea of changing their class format in on-going workshops.
They created a ning-ring and added all their workshops in that ring. No yahoo-group anymore and an easy to navigate site.
The positive about that group is that the pictures from the different workshops will be available for all the members. I’m in another ning-ring and saw myself enrolling in a class because of the pictures showed by other class-members. The general discussion forum is available for everyone becoming a member of the ring and not just the workshop members.

Sunflowers

What a playing/sewing afternoon can do to me !
I was becoming depressed because I hadn’t a minute left for me.
This summer has been full packed of emotions.
Some big decisions were made and I had to find my balance again.
But..
After viewing the pictures from our trip to Avignon, this picture was the ‘that’s it’ moment : I was inspired.
I cut a paper sized woven stabilizer.
I took my fabric scraps basket.
I took a variety of light blues and some greens.
I reduced the size of my scraps, yes, even scraps can be too large.
I layered the fabric ‘randomly’ or almost :

I forgot to tell :
Between the stabilizer and the snippets, I layered two layers of mistyfuse.
I ironed this background :

I looked for more scraps evoking a sunflower.
I freely cut some petals, leaves and stems in a variety of brown, orange and yellow.
Layered those petals on my background :

I still have not used one pin !
I closed the door because a breeze wasn’t an option : Didn’t want to go on snippet hunt.

Under the heart of the sunflower I added some wool roofing.
To protect the surface, I layered a beige polyester chiffon, the first pins were used :

I added some 'stitch and tear' on the back when I started to thread paint.
Without I wouldn’t have enough stability :

I thread painted the background with swirls to remember the mistral when we were in Avignon.

I also used some metallic thread because I wanted the blinking capturing the sunlight.

I simply zigzagged the border as final touch :

Now I feel so well again ! Not depressed any more.

One OFF-week !

My youngest daughter came back from Cannes (France) yesterday. She told she had the most beautiful holidays ever.
In the evening, after telling what she did and viewing the pictures we had to go back doing down to earth activities : the laundry.
We already hang most of the clothes and she only had to hang one short.
She was in such a hurry - because we would eat an ice-cream – when it happened…
She missed the door opening.
And since she’s always walking barefoot in the house.
She jelled and had tears in her eyes.
Her little toe pointed to the wrong side.
We went to the hospital, pictures were taken and the conclusion : a broken little toe.
The doctor taped her toe and she has an absolute interdiction of stepping on her feet for 3 weeks.
From all the bones you can break, this is one of the most stupidest.
When we were at the emergency, we couldn’t stop laughing : You know you can’t do a thing about a broken little toe but you have to be certain it’s broken.
A chance that we have a good national healthcare : I didn’t have to pay anything.
The only thing I will have to pay for, is the use of these ones :

After using them for three weeks, it will be something like 3 dollars.

A long hot summer

When I say hot, I mean : just perfect : 25° C (79°Fahrenheit) with a little sea-wind.
Because of the nice weather, I was more often outside and I didn’t play that much with fabric and colours.
What I did was colouring the collage surface in all the different blues I have adding only a touch of yellow/orange.
I did a wash and now have to wait till the surface has dried in the sun :

While waiting I tried to play further with the flower stitcher.
I first prepared a surface to play with :
Black felt
Foil
Misty fuse
Rainbow organza

I ironed the misty fuse on the felt, added the foil and then fused the organza on top of it.
This became my play surface.

Well, it seems I’m not able to stitch ‘perfect’ circles :

I obtain ovals or spirals, but circles : no way.
What am I doing wrong ?
I’m sewing on a thick felt surface. I changed the feet pressure to the max.
The thread tension is correct.
I try to keep the place around the felt clear, I hold the felt to avoid the dragging.
The only thing it could be is the size of the felt. Could it be too large ?

I just tried on a smaller piece of felt.
Well, I still have the same problem.
I will have to exercise a lot.

Lavender Landscape

I had to put an intermezzo in my blogging because I wanted to finish the lavender landscape. The quilt shop is having a class sample exhibition next week and since I was asked to give a beginners landscape class, I hurried to start and finish a class sample.
I only wish they will like my lavender landscape.
I added two detail pictures to show you the quilting.

The quilting in the landscape was free-hand machine quilted. In the borders I used an embroidery motif and my endless hoop. Embroidering the border took about 5 hours, hooping included.

I had one panic situation : I was embroidering the border when I realized I only had 1 spool from that colour ! Never enough. After some searching I found almost the same colour in a different brand. You’ll never find the place I made the colour change.
The size of this quilt is : 27 x 21 inch.
I still have to name this landscape and sign it.
During the class I will show how to machine appliqué with freezer paper and how to choose/quilt a motif in a landscape. I deliberately left a hill barely quilted to prove that even the ‘bulk’ can play in your favour.

I have 10 days to produce a small landscape quilt !
When you are speaking of pressure.
Patchwork Studio has called me to ask if I wanted to give a beginners landscape quilt workshop. It will be a 2-day class and the quilt will be finished in class.
When I give workshops I always try that what the ladies have paid for, is finished.
I don’t like the idea of letting the ladies go with an unfinished business. It’s a pity for their money and time.
This is what I have done so far :
When we were in Avignon DH and me saw the most beautiful lavender and sunflower landscapes.
I combined the two in one landscape.
I will add some cherry trees in the lavender field since the two are on the same field.

As I said : I have ten days to finish.

Flower Stitcher

I ordered a flower stitch foot at Shoppersrule and wasn’t expecting the delivery to be quick because they asked me for my preferred shipping mode and I chose the less expensive.
What a big surprise it was when, after only 4 days and with a weekend in between, I received the flower stitcher.
I was surprised by the size, I had no idea how big/small it was.After reading the explanations, I started to play.
It’s not THAT easy to use.
I will have plenty playtime before I master that foot as Valerie Campbell-Harding did.

I finished quilting my collage background. I used an elongated wavy stitch pattern with a leaf accent.
After stitching two rows, I decided to add white tulle on top just because I don’t know if I will slice my work or not.

Cold heart trapped

I finished an exercise from the holey moley club. I never thought a paper napkin would disappear so easily !
The yellow is all that is left from that napkin. I could have distress it a lot more but I didn’t want to.
I began a fabric collage using light coloured scraps :

My intention is to colour the fabric surface and then…
I still don’t know…
Well, I have an idea but I want to leave you with a curiosity feeling.
Let’s say
It will be a ‘pot pourri’ from all different workshop I followed over the years :
A bit of Ellen Lindner (instant art quilt), Terri Stegmiller (mixed media for the fiber artist), Pam Carriker (different workshops), Sue Bleiweiss (surface design), Jane Lafazio (mixed media for paper and cloth), Shelagh Folgate (her challenge).

I will also use the music from Fantasia (W.Disney) as musical inspiration. It’s my intention to make and have fun.

Holey Moley Club

Since the beginning of the month I started a year-long during challenge/workshop organized by Dale.
Every other month a new ‘task’ is given to work/play with.
As warm up exercise and because I first wanted to finish another workshop, I did a postcard-sized surface :The woven paper/fabric strips were sewn on painted/ironed cellophane and a coloured fabric background with a patterned stitch.
I sewed with a ‘circle pattern stitch’ because I wanted to accentuate the holes made by the bubbles.
The strips were kept apart as false illusion of freedom for the air bubbles.

The second ‘exercise’ I did, was stitching with a napkin and then distress the surface.

Ellen Lindner asked me if she could use my ‘Marseille – Frioul’ quilt I made during her class : “Design you own nature quilt” last year. Of course, I agreed.

Side Table

I finished altering the side table for my eldest daughter. I enjoyed the process very much.
On this picture you can see that we added some reading marks and some more pages from old books.

Dreaming lady

This is my “dreaming lady”.
I painted my lady with ‘red/auburn hair because I coloured my hair that very same colour some time ago.
Her eyes are looking nowhere, just like my eyes when I’m daydreaming.
She has a little blush – maybe because she’s tired ?
I also love her neckline.
I’m a bit scared to add more details but I don’t think it’s a necessity.

Side Table

My eldest daughter couldn’t wait for me altering her little table soo…
She sanded the table, washed it off and..
brought it to me.
Thus…. I gessoed :
A mom does what she got to do…

I started playing on her table earlier than I expected.
After a collage with words and pictures of books, I gave the surface a first colour.
Since her favourite colour is green.

I started to paint a greenwash.
Then some gesso and more collage elements and some doodles in blue.

Since the whole thing has to dry till…
Let’s say tomorrow, this way I can go and sleep early tonight.

Mixed Media

I’m having one of those ‘time of my live’ moments lately.
I’m still working on the four canvases and, the more layers I add, the more depth I begin to see hidden details.
Now I feel I can finish the canvases.

My eldest daughter, seeing the canvases asked if I wanted to alter her side table, from her lecture corner, in the same way. I told her, she could do it too but then she said : you’re the artist, not me. I know what to do on Sunday, don’t I ?

Canvases

I played a bit more with the 4 canvases from Jodi’s workshop.
My canvases are ‘coffee themed’. I used a normal pencil to draw some extra letters and flowers.
Since I had to fix the doodles and as I didn’t and still don’t have any fixative, I used hairspray.
At least I have a nice smell !

Creating those surfaces is something like ‘instant continuous gratification’.

The canvases were already great without the colour but even better with the added colour.

And it’s not finished yet but I have to wait till the painting has dryed.

My Modigliani-style portrait from Pam' workshop looks like this for the moment, I haven’t work a lot on her :

I’m so glad I was able to play – for several hours !!! - in my studio.
I’m a happy girl again.I planned to work on Shelagh’s challenge : done for this month.
I finally understood how the grass thing had to be cut.
When I sew free hand flowers, I mostly draw/sew a swirl.

I also was able to continue the 4 canvasses from Jodi Ohl’s workshop.
I added some collage elements with a theme : coffee.
My favourite hot beverage is coffee, more specifically : espresso’s, I really drink a lot of them.

I also took a picture from the canvasses individually :

Now, I have to wait till they’re all dry.
I hope I will be able to continue playing with those canvasses sometime next week.

My self portrait is ‘on hold’ because I haven’t solved the mouth problem.
But I have started a fantasy Modigliani lady thanks to Pam Carriker :

I begin to feel more confident in drawing portraits and the more : I begin to like drawing them.

I always had great respect and admiration for artists making portraits with a few lines.
This is a portrait of me when I was 11 years young. The artist who made this, used matches and sepia ink. He only needed 15 minutes to draw my portrait.

This is the artist who made the most impression on me.
This artist is José Van Gucht (1913-1980).
